2008 DARKNESS SYRAH

It's finally ready: the stupendous 2008 Darkness Syrah from Boushey Vineyards' Birdhouse Block. Imagine that Willy Wonka broke into the wine business and scored some killer fruit from Dick Boushey's Birdhouse Block in Grandview. This is crazy concentrated black silk that performs like the Everlasting Gobstopper of wines: a breakfast of blackberry cobbler layered with chocolate leading into a midafternoon snack of rhubarb, raspberry and herbal elegance which then finishes with a proper supper of roasted game, mushroom souffle and strawberry preserves. A tour de force for Willy and his cellar team of Oompa Loompas. The last two vintages scored 94 points from Wine Enthusiast and last year's got a 93 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. This one has all the stuff: color so dark you might name the wine for it, saturated black fruit richness, spice and incredible power. The previous vintages have sold out very quickly, so be sure to let us know what you would like ASAP.

Pearl
Sauvignon Blanc 2009
64% Evergreen Vineyard, 36% Stillwater Creek Vineyard, with a touch of the noble rot, botrytis cinerea. This lovechild of the Loire Valley and New Zealand is loaded with flavors of white grapefruit, guava, honeydew melon and smells of hot sidewalk after summer rain. Pearl was pressed whole cluster, aged on lees in stainless steel and neutral French oak and received weekly battonage for four months. Tastes like summertime.
